Set to blaring rock music, razor-sharp cuts and asymmetrical hems evoked a purely urban sensibility, as if the models were walking out to the runway from the city streets.

Strikingly draped dresses and skirts were paired with motorcycle jackets, wearable but still uber chic.

Dryden Sereda’s closing look was a glittery halter gown with the highest slit, truly a fitting collection for a pop star or rockstar’s girlfriend.

Each night was unique, we saw on the runway balloon dresses, avant-garde artistic looks, youthful Japanese street wear, sensual lingerie and swimwear, slow-fashion European outerwear to sparking South Asian bridal wear.

For 32 seasons, VFW has presented up-and-coming fashion designers from around the world, ranging from rookie talent to establish brands looking to establish a foothold in North America.

Some good, some not so good. 

Here are my Vancouver Fashion Week top looks.

Grandi

Vancouver fashion designer Grandi presented her bold, crayon-inspired collection entitled ‘Essential Colours’. Glossy fitted jumpsuits and dresses in every colour of the rainbow were brought to life with the help of matching metallic lipstick and wide-brimmed shades.

AJOUR

Base in Ukraine, AJOUR offers sensual, alluring lingerie made from European fabrics that includes loungewear and swimwear. With AJOUR it’s easy to be fashionable and stylish both at the seashore and at home.

Eklectic & Co

Eklectic & Co by Agatha Taras, a polish fashion designer is inspired by fashion history offers classic and modern European styles. Agatha is inspired by the history of fashion – especially the period of victorian, baroque, style from the 20’s, 40’s, and 50’s of the last century. 

Emelia’s Swimwear

Emelia’s Swimwear, a Canadian brand by Emelie Hausler, transported the audience to a tropical holiday through their collection of luxury swimwear. With the love of travel and warmer sunny destinations in mind, Emelia’s Swimwear is more than just another swimwear company – it’s a lifestyle. 

J Grubenmann

Inspired and shaped by her native country’s scenic attractions, Swiss fashion designer Janie Grubenmann brings her cultural imprint and love for quality and slow-fashion. Custom made to order, J Grubenmann offers slow fashion from her studio in St. Gallen.

Evan Clayton

Vancouver based brand Evan Clayton filled the room with adrenaline with his new collection ‘LIKE HELL’, which fuses art and fashion to create a political, personal, and artistic expression. Smoke rolled out on the runway as models featured bold garments with a theatrical appeal. 

Sunny’s Bridal

Vancouver brand Sunny’s Bridal presented their dazzling collection ‘The Divine Feminine’. Choreographed to perfection, the show featured five sets of South Asian style lavish dresses, leaving the audience in awe. 

Authentique

Egyptian designer Nada Marzouk for Authentique transported the audience into an ancient world and fused a number of eye-grabbing details such as silver sequins, midnight sparkles, and graphics that depicted Egyptian architecture. 

YONFA

YONFA, a collection from Japanese designer Kim Yonghwa, was the embodiment of accessible, comfortable elegance. In her collection, Yonghwa played with dimensions, offering a range of oversized jackets, crisp calf-length white shirts and sweaters cut at unique yet flattering angles. 

Singh Styles

Singh Styles collection, a varied line of classy and exquisitely tailored garments for both the male and female form. Which stands out as a confident and creative display of modern tailored style.

Held at the Chinese Cultural Centre, hundreds of invited guests, designers and their fans packed the David Lam Hall for an evening of the latest fashion looks from around the world.

Presenting on the runway that evening was Emi Jingu, a fashion designer who has won many awards in balloon art and fashion. Her collection titled, “Unlimited” included eight creative balloon dresses made from small balloons with elegant couture silhouettes. 

Jingu’s dresses featured peplum-styles, slim bodices, and flared skirts, highlighting her extraordinary skill. The eccentric garments were complemented with sleek hairstyles, glossy makeup with black tones, and stilettos to encompass a chic futuristic style.

Followed by YONFA, the creative fashions of Japanese designer Kim Yonghwa showcased comfortable elegance pieces made from natural cottons and wool with a seasonal colour pallet of brown and blue.

Yonghwa played with dimensions, offering a range of oversized jackets, crisp calf-length white shirts and sweaters cut at unique yet flattering angles.

With flattering silhouettes in elementary colours of white, navy, black and tan, YONFA is all about comfort, elegance and accessible style.

From the land of the rising sun, designers have recently begun to market themselves on the world stage which offers audiences a difference perspective on fashion today.

The designer previews at Vancouver Fashion Week gala were a cross-cultural experience that juxtaposed intimidating, leather-clad gothic looks and sparkling, transportive Indian bridal wear. Featuring loud red sparkles, soft woollen comfort wear and sexy fun swimwear.

In front of the main entrance, brightly blazing white lights spelled out the signature “VFW”. To hordes of fashionistas, influencers and others ‘in the know’, this signified that local and international designers had descended on the city to showcase their talent over seven fabulous days.

Bright Lights & White Tents

The large white tents, which created the perfect backdrop for the fashion collections, provided a unique energy and excitement to the local community and we hope that this will be VFW’s new home.

Vancouver Fashion Week Spring Summer 2019 Collections

Monday evening was Vancouver Fashion Week’s Opening Gala which featured single ensembles by over 20 designers as well as two designer collections. Phuong My’s stylish collection of women’s evening wear kicked off VFW’s first year at its new location.

Phuong My

Vietnamese-born My, a graduate of the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, launched her label in 2013, catering to stylish Asian women, including many celebrities.

Her collection at VFW featured luxury materials and shaped gowns of the sort that would be found on the red carpet in Asia and the Middle East.

Having exhibited her designs in New York, San Francisco, Tokyo, Singapore, Perth and Dubai, she now has 30 retail locations in 20 countries stretching from France and Italy to Dubai and Southeast Asia. With her international credentials and global reach, this up-and-coming style superstar was just the right designer to launch Vancouver Fashion Week’s new downtown location.

Priszl

The look is all gold from fashion designer Priscilla Listia who has been actively involved in fashion industry since 2014. She is creative director and founder of emerging fashion brands ‘PRISZL†and ‘MIA AMICA†based in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Her designs has gained recognition from the fashion world in both the homeland and abroad as a trend maker who successfully brings a new style of Indonesian traditional batik fashion. She was one of the selected designers for Indonesian fashion trend forecasting 2016 / 2017 by the board of Indonesia Fashion Week 2015.

Odysay

The ODYSAY silhouette has a distinct look: dresses are cut to clean and minimalist lines. Styles are deliberately uncluttered. Distinctive embellishments add surprising, delightful and highly feminine accents. The result is a dress of sensual and timeless elegance that favors lasting style over fleeting trends.

Founded in 2015 in Geneva, ODYSAY was born with a wish: to make every important moment of a woman’s life more sumptuous.

Mezis

South Korea brand targeting stylish professional women, they have a goal to create a leading global brand. Mezis has participated in several runway shows in Germany, France and China. The beautiful white dress above was a showstopper and demonstrates that have the talent to go big.

Srishti Kaur Designs

Srishti Kaur Designs offers customized eveningwear and bridal dresses based in New Zealand. Each gown is inspired by beauty, feminine elegance and minimalism, supported by high quality construction techniques and fabrics. Our aesthetic derives from an intertwining of elegance and simplicity ensuring women are left feeling beautiful and empowered.

Showcasing “Shades of you” collection at Vancouver Fashion Week SS 2018 with a selection of evening and bridal gowns. Each is made to evoke a different emotion in a woman from romance, seduction, power, drama to playfulness. The collection obtains a mix of subtle and traditional silhouettes – inspired by elaborate fabrics such as bold laces and 3-D embroidery, integrated with hand sewing and applique techniques.

Hadasa

Cesia Kerem Ramos was born in Panama to a Guatemalan Mother and Half Black/Half Chinese Father. Her design philosophy encompasses the social consciousness of heritage, nostalgia and the retraction of the known through faith. Her designs are purely inspired by her upbringing, roots, and culture.

In 2016, Cesia decides to open her first ‘atelier’ based in Guatemala catering to a private clientele. Returning to her mother’s country by starting her own luxury brand under the name: HADASA. The HADASA signature is characterized by the mixture and complexity of cultural heritage. Creating a modern, edgy but timeless elegant fashion.

Minori Isomichi

Fashion designer Minori Isomichi from Osaka Japan gave us a new perception of traditional Japanese culture and style. As a student of Marronnier College of Fashion Design, she has presented in several fashion design contests locally and abroad.

NVI

Ivonne Diaz de Sandi is a Mexican fashion designer and business woman, with 28 years of working experience in the fashion industry throughout national and international markets

As founder of NVI fashion brand which seeks to inspire women to be brave, achieve their dreams, show their gratitude, feel free to express their personality and show the world their inner and outer beauty.

Playful and fluorescent colors are words best describe Nozomi Kuwahara latest collection. With a mix of geometric patterns and voluminous sleeves, her look is street style ready.
