Since November 2024, a noticeable shift in travel preferences has emerged, weakening demand for U.S. destinations, including California, Florida, Hawaii, Nevada, and New York.

Canadians are significantly personalizing their travel arrangements. Culinary and beverage experiences have emerged as the primary factors influencing travel decisions, followed closely by outdoor adventures and cultural enrichment.

Canadians are drawn to Europe

This summer, European destinations are drawing more Canadian tourists thanks to new routes and connections launched by Air Canada, Porter, and WestJet. The rise in available seats has led to lower airfares, making the Netherlands, Portugal, and the United Kingdom popular choices for vacation travel.

Many Canadian vacationers are now exploring destinations that align with their travel goals and budgets. Proactively influenced by exchange rates, airfare, and stronger connections to their holiday destinations, such as wellness, adventure and immersive cultural experiences.

There has also been a growing interest in Canadian destinations like Alberta, Newfoundland, and Nova Scotia this year. The East Coast provides a more affordable family vacation than popular areas such as Ontario and Quebec.

Countries that align with their values

Canadian travellers are now evaluating where they spend their tourism dollars. Travel is essential to them, and they now wish to invest their money in countries that align with their values. 

This adaptation of luxury travel experiences for mainstream vacationers marks the beginning of a new trend with the potential to transform the Canadian traveller forever.

After months of lockdown, Gen Z and Millennials intend to holiday close to home this year. For those seeking luxury, it’s about high-quality experiences with loved ones, even if it means travelling far.

Luxury travellers now prefer slow travel and extended vacations that combine work and leisure. Many people travel with their laptops to work remotely.

By choosing to travel more slowly, individuals can immerse themselves more deeply in local cultures and engage in more experiences that allow them to explore and truly appreciate their destination. They seek unconventional vacation experiences beyond typical resorts.

We are now seeing a significant demand for wellness travel and immersive retreats. Travellers are ensuring that their vacation plans include time for well-being and that they care for themselves.

Virtuoso, a global network of luxury travel advisors, surveyed its clients and found that five European countries are the top destinations for luxury travel. These countries are Italy, Greece, France, England, and Spain. 

Paris was ranked the top luxury travel city, followed by Rome, Barcelona, Florence, and London.

Italy took the top spot with families, followed by Hawaii, Costa Rica, France, and the United States.

As for honeymoon destinations, Italy was first, followed by Greece, Bali, French Polynesia, and Maldives.

Luxury travellers’ book during the shoulder season to avoid crowds and seek exclusivity and privacy.

Starting in 2024, day visitors must register on the Venice city website and pay a nominal daily entry fee of 5 Euros (C$7) before arrival for visiting specific days during the peak tourist season. This innovative measure aims to address the challenges posed by over-tourism and overcrowding while encouraging visitors to extend their stay and explore more of what this UNESCO World Heritage site offers.

By implementing a system that requires day visitors to register and pay an entry fee, Venice hopes to deter the overwhelming influx of tourists during peak hours 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m., particularly on weekends from April to July. Upon paying the entry fee, visitors will be issued a QR code for their mobile device, ensuring a seamless process for both visitors and authorities.

Venice charging day visitors is expected to have multiple benefits for both locals and tourists alike. Firstly, it will help reduce overcrowding in popular tourist areas, allowing for a more enjoyable experience for everyone. Additionally, by encouraging day visitors to stay longer in Venice, they will have the opportunity to discover hidden gems beyond the well-trodden paths of the city’s main attractions.

Furthermore, this initiative is not meant as a deterrent for tourism but rather as an effective means of managing visitor numbers sustainably. By implementing these measures specifically targeted at day visitors, Venice aims to strike a balance between preserving its cultural heritage and welcoming those who wish to experience its unique charm.

It is important to note that hotel guests are exempt from this entry fee as it is already included in their accommodation charges, but they still need to apply for a QR code to enter and visit Venice. This ensures that those who choose overnight stays contribute towards supporting local businesses while enjoying their time in Venice.

In addition to these measures aimed at controlling visitor numbers during peak periods, Venice also recognizes the need for additional infrastructure development. Efforts are underway to increase the availability of hotel rooms to accommodate more overnight guests comfortably.

Venice’s decision to begin charging day visitors marks an important step towards sustainable tourism management, setting an example for other popular destinations facing similar challenges. By implementing a system that requires day visitors to register and pay a small entry fee, Venice hopes to strike a balance between preserving its cultural heritage and ensuring a positive experience for locals and tourists alike.

In that spirit, this summer, I decided to spend a weekend visiting the best South Okanagan wineries on a personal Porsche wine tasting tour. As a lover of both good wine and Porsches, I thought I would combine these two interests and see what happened. I was on a mission to discover exceptional wines and to connect with local growers and winemakers for a truly immersive travel experience.

The South Okanagan stretches from Penticton on Okanagan Lake, to Osoyoos on the edge of the Canada – US border. The area has nearly 200 wineries, producing more than 75 grape varieties, and includes several microclimates with varying soil compositions.

Upon my arrival in Penticton on Saturday at noon, I visited Loki’s Garage, located behind Front St., in the downtown business district. Originally a multi-car garage, it has been converted into a restaurant with large bay doors and plenty of patio seating. Here, I met owner Luke Walsh, who works from scratch with the best local ingredients to create memorable meals. The house- cured pastrami and pickled sauerkraut sandwich was so good that it reminded me of my recent visit to Montreal.

My first winery tasting that afternoon was at Poplar Grove Winery located on the Naramata Bench which offered an astonishing panoramic view of Okanagan Lake and the town of Penticton from their tasting room and restaurant. I was greeted by Daniel Hinchey, tasting room manager, who served me their signature red blend, The Legacy, which has amazing qualities that truly reflect the character of the region. With some of the best red wines and incredible views, Poplar Grove Winery is a must-visit.

Leaving the winery, I continued on to Naramata, a village of only about 2000 residents about 15 kilometers north of Penticton. There I discovered Shades of Linen Clothing. Owner Diane Jensen has been operating from this small shop for the past 16 years, designing and manufacturing resort wear for men and women. Working with natural blend fabrics such as linen and cotton/linen blends, she pre-shrinks the fabric before sewing and clients can order custom tailored pieces; she even ships worldwide. I was reminded by this experience that, when traveling, we make a difference by shopping local.

I then visited TIME Winery which is located within a historic and revitalized movie theatre in downtown Penticton. This elegant tasting bar and restaurant offers the renowned Chronos, Evolve Cellars and the McWatters Collection wines. During my VIP tasting, I learned about sparkling wine production and enjoyed their famous Sabre School experience; I even opened a bottle of bubbly with a quick stroke of a large sabre blade! With a reputation for excellent wines and the best gourmet burgers in the Okanagan, TIME Winery made for the perfect ending to my first day.

For accommodation, I checked into the Penticton Lakeside Resort’s new luxury west wing which is built primarily with sustainably managed BC timber rather than the commonly used steel and concrete. My contemporary sixth-floor room had light coloured wood accents and a spacious private balcony with spectacular views of Okanagan Lake Bench and the Okanagan Highlands. With covered parking for my Porsche, this is certainly my choice of hotel when visiting Penticton.

As a seasoned traveller, I seek out local hang-outs such as Wayne and Freda Coffee Shop where I enjoyed my next day’s brunch. A ten-minute walk from the Penticton Lakeside Resort, the Cafe offers sustainable coffee and a curated menu of breakfast sandwiches. I ordered the Salmon toast with a poached egg and watched the town of Penticton come alive on a warm Sunday morning.

Afterwards, I loaded my Porsche’s trunk with my overnight bag and, with the top down, I headed south towards Okanagan Falls. My driving route was a curvy two-lane road along Lakeside Road on the edge of Skaha Lake away from highway traffic.

It was Sunday morning and I wasn’t looking for a religious experience, but I then came across Blasted Church Vineyards. Located in the hills above Skaha Lake, the entrance greets you with a “Come to Church” sign with “Blasted” graffiti’d in by some mischievous nuns. Beside the sign sat a church pew, over 100 years old, which I learned is from the original Okanagan Falls – based house of prayer that was dismantled and rebuilt in 1929.

Blasted Church Vineyards, with its gently blasphemous stance, are famous for their truly delightful handcrafted wines. I learned from winemaker Evan Saunders that their small lot wines – under 300 cases – have received accolades in Canada and from aboard. My wine tasting experience included various wines, served on their patio, and concluded with a glass of Blaufrankisch Rose, complemented by their tasty cheese and charcuterie plate.

Pointing my Porsche south, my next stop was CheckMate Artisanal Winery in Oliver. Upon entering the parking lot, I discovered two Porsche EV chargers which was a first on my road trips; I had not yet come across any other Porsches on this trip and was delighted to know that other like-minded drivers were enjoying the Okanagan. Alas, my curated tasting experience at CheckMate was presented by Valerio Mariani, who loves Ferraris. Being Italian, he can be forgiven.

From the CheckMate tasting room, furnished with Italian furniture in all black, featuring smoked glass, guests enjoy views of the vineyards. Grown from the oldest Chardonnay vines in BC, I enjoyed the 2018 Queen’s Advantage Chardonnay which explodes in your mouth and yet remains silky with hints of butterscotch, marmalade and barrel spice. Try the 2018 End Game Merlot for a complex aroma with licorice, spice, chocolate, raspberry, deep red fruits and a taste that is rich on the palate with savory notes, raspberry and dark chocolate.

My last visit of the day was at Nk’Mip Cellars in Osoyoos, located beside the Spirit Ridge Resort. Nk’Mip is North America’s first Indigenous owned and operated winery dedicated to crafting premium VQA wines. Here, I met Justin Hall, winemaker, who shared with me his people’s history and his determination to build a successful winery. My private wine tasting included both white and red wines with a focus on the grape, for a more refreshing taste reflecting the terroir of this unique desert climate.

On my final night, I stayed at the luxury Spirit Ridge Resort which embraces the story-telling of the local Osoyoos Indian Band through art, language, food and stories. This resort property has a wonderful pool with views of Osoyoos Lake, a spa, and fabulous dining options.

Spirit Ridge Resort’s signature restaurant, the Bear, the Fish, the Root & the Berry, is named after a Chaptik story of four Chiefs that represent the key elements of indigenous cuisine. The four chiefs are Skemxist (Black Bear), Siya (Saskatoon Berry), Spitlem (Bitter Root), and Ntyxtix (King Salmon). I can highly recommend it, as my evening dinner was a succulent Bison ribeye with wine of course – the perfect ending for my Porsche weekend tour.

Only a five-and-a-half-hour drive from Vancouver, British Columbia’s South Okanagan is one of the great undiscovered wine regions in the country, so pack up your Porsche and visit before the masses arrive.

Chihuly Bridge of Glass

While standing on the Chihuly Bridge of Glass which connects the Thea Foss Waterway with the Museum of Glass in downtown Tacoma, you can’t help but be mesmerized by the Seaform Pavilion ceiling which holds over two thousand multi-coloured glass art objects. 

Tacoma is the hometown of world-famous glass artist Dale Chihuly. His art, suspended above the bridge walkway, is spellbinding. For me, it evokes memories of the vivid underwater colours of my recent visit to the coral reefs of Australia.

At the centre of the bridge are two crystal blue glass sculptures which radiate their own light day and night, adding some excitement to Tacoma’s skyline. As a plus, you will find some of Chihuly’s largest blown glass artworks displayed on the 80-foot Venetian Wall. 

My recommendation is to visit the Bridge of Glass at sunset when the evening light filtering through the multi coloured art glass makes for a very romantic setting.

Tacoma Art Museum

With a goal of connecting people with art, the Tacoma Art Museum has a collection of over 5,000 works with a focus on art and artists from the pacific northwest and western regions.

Currently on exhibition are treasured favourites from their legacy collections of European paintings including Pierre Auguste Renior’s Heads of Two Young Girlsas well as Japanese woodblocks prints and American modern art.

The new Benaroya Wing, just opened in January 2019, showcases some of the most famous  studio glass artists from around the globe such as Lino Tagliapietra, Stanislav Libensky and Clifford Rainey. This additional space will allow visitors to enjoy the largest museum collection of Dale Chihuly glass and so much more.

If you have never visited Tacoma Art Museum or if you haven’t recently, now is the time. My recommendation is to take in one of their public tours, held on Thursdays at 6 pm and Saturdays at 2 pm and included with your museum admission.

LeMay – America’s Car Museum

LeMay – America’s Car Museum, the largest automotive museum in North America with over 300 cars, trucks and motorcycles on display, is a celebration of art in motion. 

For those who love Hollywood’s automotive history, the Bullitt Mustang – possibly the most iconic movie car of all time – is on display until July 4, 2019. The 1968 Ford Mustang GT 390 Fastback was driven by legendary actor and motorsport enthusiast Steve McQueen while filming Bullitt’s 9 minute and 42 second movie chase. The famous car chase scene, which contains no dialogue, placed the audience in the passenger seat as the car sped down the actual streets of San Francisco. There were two vehicles used in the filming and this is the only surviving car.

My favourite exhibitions are those that showcase the opulence and luxury that emanate from the classic and custom coachwork of the 1930’s. This was an era when a luxury car from Mercedes-Benz, Lincoln or Duesenberg was built as a “rolling chassis” and sent out to custom coach builders to be personalized, with a level of old world craftsmanship, for presidents, Hollywood stars and the very rich. These are one-of-a-kind automobiles for the “old money” crowd.

Additionally, visitors will enjoy the British Invasion exhibition which brings to life the history of the cars that invaded American after WWII up to the 1960’s. Remember the Beatles, Baby You Can Drive My Car? Well, you’ll be humming the classic tune as you explore this collection.

As you arrive, you will find Orizon, a 75 foot tall curved steel and plate glass sculpture commissioned for the hotel by Greek glass artist Costas Varotsos. Inside the lobby hangs a large blown silvered sea anemone-like chandelier by Massimo Micheluzzi plus more amazing displays by Dale Chihuly.

Each floor has a glass art display with a biography on the featured artist and photos and drawings of the creative processes involved in making each piece. During my visit, I admired a beautiful glass brassiere by a Scottish artist which sat opposite the elevator.

Located in the southwest corner of Washington state, Long Beach Peninsula is comprised of a 28-mile long stretch of land with a string of small communities and cities, parks, refuges and multiple attractions. In addition, it is a source of a culinary experience that delights not only northern Californians but also visitors and locals of the Pacific Northwest.

For over a century, the delectable oysters that delight San Fran diners have been harvested in Willapa Bay to the east of the Long Beach Peninsula. Delicious razor clams are picked along its Pacific Ocean beaches to the west.

The demand for Long Beach Peninsula oysters in San Francisco began with the California Gold Rush in 1848 which created one of the largest human migrations in history at that time. Approximately 300,000 men from across the United States and around the world quit their jobs, left their wives and families behind and headed west hoping to strike it rich.

San Francisco immediately became the center of the gold rush, resulting in the city population growing from 1,000 to 25,000 in a single year between 1848 to 1849.

Prospectors arrived in town with three objectives. First, they purchased gold mining supplies; second, they sought women; third, they ate oysters. I can’t say for sure but I think maybe there was a connection between the women and the oysters.

Back in the 1840s, Long Beach Peninsula oysters about the size of your thumb cost a silver dollar. Shipped down the west coast from Willapa Bay aboard large mast schooners, oysters were paid for in gold, naturally, which made residents in the peninsula’s town of Oysterville the highest per capita holders of gold anywhere outside of San Francisco at that time.

When visiting the Long Beach Peninsula today, travel Hwy 103 north from Seaview to Oysterville – a 30-minute drive. On your right are the calm cold waters of the Willapa Bay tidal fields where oysters are raised. Watch for oyster shells amassed 12 feet or higher outside the grounds of the processing plants which confirm that this community is indeed home to the largest oyster producer in America.

As you arrive in Oysterville, you will view a street lined with original homes as well as the school and the white color church both built in the last century. Now a nationally recognized historic district, modern Oysterville offers a glimpse of what life would have been like in this residential community 150 years ago.

Fascinating history is just one of the many reasons to make a trip to the region. Along with fresh Long Beach Peninsula oysters and razor clams, the region offers farm to table fresh dining experiences and terrific family recreation such as beachcombing, bike riding and hiking on the Discovery Trail, an 8.5 mile paved trail, covering just a small portion of the 28 miles of sandy beaches.

From the heritage charm of Oysterville to the great eats in Seaview and beyond, from fresh oysters to family friendly outings, the Long Beach Peninsula has is all.

The Depot Restaurant, one of the top dining choices in Seaview, is located in a restored railroad train depot. The award-winning restaurant is the brainchild of chef/owner Michael Lalewicz and his wife and co-owner Nancy Gorshe. 

An absolute must-have, the Clamshell Railroad Clam Chowder is made from fresh local Willapa Bay steamers and diced razor clams in a creamy broth of garlic, potato and leeks.

Complete your meal with Oysters ‘Scargot, six fresh Willapa petite oysters broiled in garlic lime butter and served with a French baguette. Or why not try the fresh pan or deep fried oysters with roasted garlic aioli dipping sauce?

The Depot Restaurant offers a farm to table menu that includes fresh salads, soups, meats and the local catch of the day. You won’t be disappointed.

42^nd Street Café & Bistro

Locals call the 42^nd Street Café & Bistro, which serves the biggest razor clams I have ever seen, the original Long Beach Peninsula “roadside café”. Flash fried with a flour, buttermilk and saltine cracker crust, the clams are served with fried red potatoes and house made parsley caper mayonnaise.

Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the café offers a wide-ranging menu of soups, salads, meats, seafood and pastas and is yet another superb dining experience for visitors to Seaview.

Renowned for their unpretentious luxury and hospitality, the Boreas Bed and Breakfast Inn offers comfortable accommodations along with daily three and four course breakfasts that guarantee to get you out of bed each morning.

During my visit, breakfast began with local fruit and freshly baked pastries, followed by the Inn’s famous Washington stuffed pears with dried cranberries and pecans marinated with spiced rum. A terrific way to start a visit to Long Beach Peninsula!

World Kite Museum

Home to the Washington State International Kite Festival held in late August, the World Kite Museum on Long Beach Peninsula offers exhibitions and educational events, showcasing the kite as a multicultural object of art, design, and pulling power.

In one of many exhibition rooms, you will learn about ALOX, one of the earliest American kit manufacturers. Dime store kites from the 1920s -1960s are displayed and fascinating bits of history abound.

Did you know, for example, that kites were used as antennae lifters during World War II before the invention of cordless phones, radar and the Internet? The museum is a treat for visitors of all ages. After all, you’re never too old to fly a kite!
