Produced by the Chef’s Table Society of BC (CTS) in collaboration with the Pacific Prawn Fishermen’s Association (PPFA), this cherished coastal tradition has been a Vancouver favourite since 2006. The festival kicks off the much-awaited BC spot prawn season, bringing together chefs, fishers, and food enthusiasts to celebrate one of the province’s most iconic and sustainable seafoods.

This year, they warmly invite Vancouverites to support our local fishers during the Spot Prawn festival, especially as they navigate uncertain times due to tariffs imposed by China. With export demand and prices declining, our harvesters and the coastal community are feeling the financial strain. Let’s come together to show our support and appreciation for their hard work.

Back by popular demand, Chefs’ Table Society will serve up a Prawn & Seafood Chowder. Tickets for the chowder with a freshly baked bun are $12 per bowl (plus tax and service), and you can take it to go!

Spot Prawn Festival Brunch
Excited about attending the weekend brunch featuring a tasting menu with six delicious spot prawn dishes that showcase the many ways this delicacy can be enjoyed. Dishes will be prepared by some of BC’s finest chefs—a great way to sample a variety of creations and connect with the chefs as you move between food stations, while enjoying samples of BC wine, beer, and non-alcoholic beverages. It also supports The Commons by CTS—a dynamic new culinary hub in Vancouver dedicated to preserving BC’s rich food heritage while fostering education, industry connections, and the next generation of culinary talent.

British settlers and convicts brought pies to Australia

The origins of the meat pie date back to medieval England, where street vendors sold them to the poor.  British settlers and convicts in the 18th century brought this delightful snack to Australia. Aussies began experimenting with various ingredients and crafted smaller pie versions over time. By the 1800s, these pies gained immense popularity and became a staple throughout the 1900s—kids grew up enjoying them in school cafeterias while families frequented bakeries on weekends.

What makes these Australian meat pies so popular is their versatility; they are perfect for every season! On chilly winter days, there’s nothing quite like the comforting steam rising from a freshly baked pie. In summer, they make for an ideal beach snack after a morning surf or barbeque favourite—mini-party pies are often seen alongside sausage rolls at outdoor gatherings. And let’s not forget about sports games; no Aussie football match day is complete without grabbing a meat pie from the kiosk pie warmer.

Love by Britto menu

Love by Britto is an intimate 68-seat venue featuring an exquisite display of the artist’s familiar and joyful designs against a restaurant backdrop. It is designed to immerse guests in a world of colour, bold patterns, heartfelt emotions, engaging service, and breathtaking romantic ocean views. 

The seven-course dining experience begins with intoxicating aphrodisiacs like Oysters with Lemongrass Kafir, Mirin and Gold Flakes.

Entrees feature creative heart-shaped presentations and include savoury Tuna and avocado, Pomegranate, and Togarashi; cappuccino of Wild Mushroom soup; salad of Beets, Figs, and Goat Cheese; granita of Pink Champagne and Rose Petals; tail of Lobster Thermador; and Succulent Beef Tenderloin and Truffle Jus. In true Love Boat style, the dessert features a heart-shaped Chocolate Lava Cake, Fresh Berries, and raspberry Cream, plus Petits Fours.

Cocktails

Specialty cocktails and an extensive wine list were thoughtfully crafted and selected to complement the menu and are available à la carte. Seven newly crafted, love-themed cocktails were created with offerings including:

• Strawberry Love Potion – Tequila Rose, Disaronno Amaretto, Chambord, Strawberries

• Expresso My Love – Jameson, OM Chocolate Liqueur, Disaronno Amaretto, Demerara, Chocolate Bitters, Espresso

Each course and cocktail is a testament to Sodamin’s culinary expertise and Britto’s artistic inspiration.

My visit was part of the PCA-CWR Big Horn Tour, which included over 40 Porsche owners from Canada and the USA exploring Banff National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Having visited Banff numerous times, I’ve witnessed its remarkable growth and transformation. On Banff Ave, the main boulevard, you will now find top fashion boutiques such as Canada Goose, Lululemon Athletica, Patagonia and a more diverse food scene. So, it is no longer the quiet, rustic Canadian Rockies town I experienced growing up.

Castle in the Rockies

The Fairmont Banff Springs, also known as the ‘Castle in the Rockies,’ was opened in 1888 by the Canadian Pacific Railway as one of Canada’s earliest grand railway hotels. In 1988, the hotel buildings were designated a National Historic Site of Canada. 

As you approach the main entrance, you enter the eleven-story central tower with steeply pitched roofs, ornate dormers, and gables. It is perched on a lush, green, forested mountainside overlooking a valley towards Mount Rundle.

In 1858, British explorer John Palliser renamed the mountain after Reverend Robert Rundle, who conducted missionary work in western Canada in the 1840s.

Best Patio Award 2024

As you step into the hotel lobby, take one of the curved staircases to the second floor, where the Rundle Bar is located towards the rear of the building. Ask for a table on the outdoor patio, which offers a panoramic view of the snow-capped Cascade mountains, or you can choose a plush seat inside by the fireplace.

Our visit was well-timed, as the Rundle Bar was awarded the ‘Best Patio Award 2024’ by Canada’s 100 Best, the definitive guide to the nation’s top restaurants, bars, and chefs. 

The bar’s interior design is reminiscent of a cozy living room. It features bespoke furniture groupings and intimate lighting pockets, creating a unique and inviting atmosphere.

The Rundle Bar’s lounge is anchored by a magnificent central bar, which connects to double-volume wooden arches that were once part of the original building facade. These arches have been transformed into full-height shelving with custom bronze and wood engraving, preserving the bar’s rich history.

The engraved ‘thistle’ is a common motif in the linenfold, plaster, and stained glasswork found throughout the historic hotel. One of the original arches next to the grand bar has been transformed into a floor-to-ceiling bookshelf with a secret door that leads guests to a posh speakeasy.

Wildflower, Rundle Bar’s signature cocktail

They recently introduced Rundle Bar Gin, exclusive to the bar in partnership with Canmore-based Wild Life Distillery. 

The gin features butterfly pea flower to create a vibrant purple hue when citrus and tonic is added. It is paired with flavorful botanical ingredients including juniper, coriander, lemon and grapefruit peel as well as angelica, orris and licorice root, to create a perfectly balanced floral gin. 

I recommend ordering the Rundle Bar’s signature cocktail, the Wildflower, on your next visit to the Fairmont Banff Springs.

Hotel bars: where unforgettable experiences come to life

Over the years, I have always enjoyed visiting hotel bars with my journalism colleagues. I fondly remember meeting in iconic hotels such as the Savoy in London, the Peninsula in Hong Kong, and the Carlton in St. Moritz.

A haven where I shared indelible life adventures with associates and occasionally with captivating women has genuinely enriched my life. 

As a luxury travel journalist, I’ve discovered that visiting historic hotel bars is one of life’s greatest pleasures. Cheers!

Doppio Zero refers to Italian 00 flour

Doppio Zero’s name refers to Italian 00 flour, the finest and lightest grade of flour available. Widely recognized as the gold standard for pizza making, its soft texture and crispy crust create an unforgettable light and airy pizza. 

Even though this was my first visit to Doppio Zero, Founder Angelo Sannino and his staff made us all feel welcome upon our arrival.

Stylish vibe greets you upon arrival

The restaurant’s interior features warm maple wood tables, chairs, and bench seats covered in bright turquoise fabric. A mirrored bar stretches along one side of the dining area. At the rear of the restaurant, the kitchen has a huge wood-burning pizza oven. Above are several round-lighted chandeliers offering a stylish vibe to our dining experience.

When you open their menu, you’ll find a focus on Southern Italian cuisine, emphasizing homemade pasta, seafood, and Neapolitan pizza. 

Pasta made fresh every morning

Doppio Zero makes all its pasta fresh every morning at its Concord location. It ensures natural seasonal flavours by using only organic eggs and the best Italian flour for its pasta dishes from the southern Italian region.

Here, you can enjoy comfort foods such as ravioli and lasagna. Plus, Marechiaro, homemade squid ink tagliolini with jumbo shrimp, clams, and roasted garlic in a light, spicy tomato sauce.

The Fettuccine Short Ribs caught my eye. They are made from homemade egg fettuccine with slow-braised (24 hours) short ribs in a Chianti red wine sauce and shaved parmesan cheese.

Neapolitan Pizza

I finally decided on the homemade spinach Ravioli, filled with Portobello mushrooms, ricotta, and fondue truffle sauce. It was delicious and reminded me of my last visit to Naples.

Those with a hearty appetite can choose Branzino, seared Mediterranean Sea Bass. Or Bistecca, a 12 oz. grilled black Angus rib eye steak with roasted potatoes and an Italian green sauce.

The menu has over a dozen fabulous Neapolitan pizzas made from scratch in red and white for lighter meals.

Surrey’s Culinary Spice Trail showcases the diverse and vibrant flavours of Indian cuisine, with northern dishes such as butter chicken and southern dishes featuring mainly fresh fruits and vegetables.

Nepalese cuisine may be rare in your neighbourhood, but it has a comforting familiarity once you experience it. Inspired by North Indian, Chinese, and Tibetan cuisine, they put their unique ethnic flavour with Himalayan steamed dumplings, making them a favourite among Surrey locals.

I recommend visiting the following restaurants along Surrey’s Culinary Spice Trail for an unforgettable dining experience without leaving home.

Raunaka Indian Cuisine

Raunaka Indian Cuisine offers a delectable vegetarian street food menu bursting with flavour. Typically sold by Indian street vendors, it has an intense flavour from the tiny region of Amritsar, just east of Pakistan in Punjab, India. 

Kerala Kitchen

Under Chef Sujith, Kerala Kitchen is where you will find the best southern Indian foods, from dosas and immaculate idlis to steamed rice and lentil cakes served with fresh chutneys and hot sambar. Specializing in the regional staples of Kerala, fish, seafood, and coconut cream-based curries are found on the menu.

Kathmandu Bar & Grill

Kathmandu Bar & Grill is where you will discover delightful East Asian dishes with bold South Asian spices. Serving over 30 types of momos, Himalayan dumplings are steamed, deep-fried, and served with chilli, jhol, Nepalese tomato soup, or tandoor-cooked. Add a Nepalese-style chow mien for a tasty Indochine dining experience.

Chacha’s Tandoor & Grill

Chacha’s Tandoor and Grill is the master of the tandoor, sorcerer of spices and crafter of the kabab. Please don’t leave without trying their mouth-watering kalami kabab, the daal makhana or the chicken tikka. 

Chaiiwala of London

The Chaiiwala family can trace their beginnings and their closely guarded Karak Chai recipe back 90 years ago to their small tea stall operated by their great-grandfather in the markets of Delhi. Pick up a cup of smooth chai and choose from breakfast plates, street food, and tori dishes for appetites big and small.

Apna Chaat House

One of Surrey’s popular food spots, Apna Chaat, offers authentic Indian street food experiences. Walk up to the counter and enjoy simple, quick, inexpensive, and tasty Golgappas at this famous dining spot simulating the bustling streets of India.

Clove, the Art of Dining

Clove is a warm, friendly restaurant with a modern luxury vibe and a menu inspired by India’s ancient and regional cooking styles. Offering dishes such as Afghani lamb, Murgh Tikka, and Seafood Moilee. Your visit would not be complete without trying one of their collections of Indian-inspired cocktails, each with its own beautiful story.

Enjoy a five-course MICHELIN-star meal with wine pairings. Taxes and gratuities are extra. Tickets are non-refundable. Modifications and substitutions are not allowed. Two seating are available: 5:30 PM and 8:30 PM.

We have a new Michelin One-Star restaurant, Okeya Kyujiro in Yaletown. Five additional restaurants received the coveted ‘Bib Gourmand’, totalling 17. Plus 12 new ‘Michelin Recommend ‘restaurants joined Vancouver’s coveted list of Michelin eateries, bringing the total to over 50.
