Discover Quito, Ecuador, in the middle of the world

This December, Air Canada is making it easy for Canadians to visit Quito, Ecuador’s vibrant capital, with non-stop flights from Toronto and Montréal. In only six hours, you can arrive in a city where adventure starts right at the equator.

Quito is often called the Capital of the Middle of the World because it sits where the Northern and Southern Hemispheres meet. Ecuador even gets its name from this unique spot on the equator.

Ecuador is known as the world’s crossroads for good reason. Thanks to its mild climate, travellers can explore misty Amazon rainforests, climb snow-capped volcanoes, swim in the warm Pacific, or visit the famous Galápagos Islands.

A living UNESCO treasure

Quito, founded in the 16th century, sits high in the Andean foothills at 2,850 metres, stretching across the slopes of the Pichincha volcano. Its altitude and setting make the journey there a memorable experience.

Quito’s UNESCO-listed historic center is the best preserved in Latin America. Here, you can wander through grand plazas, ornate churches, and over 130 monuments that share the city’s long history.

Biodiversity

Just outside the city is the Andean Chocó, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve full of life. There are 2,000 plant species, more than 500 bird species, and over 100 mammal species. Misty cloud forests cover the area, with waterfalls and rare wildlife all around.

Galapagos

Quito is the perfect starting point for your Galápagos adventure. On these secluded islands, you can discover over 9,000 species, many of which are found nowhere else on Earth.

The Galápagos gives you a close-up wildlife experience you won’t find anywhere else. Expedition and small luxury ships limit the number of visitors. Many travellers book their trips from Quito to get the best value and local advice.

Between June and September, you might see humpback whales off Ecuador’s coast as they return to these warm waters to breed.

Chocolate: Food of the Gods

If you love chocolate, you’ll be interested to know that Ecuador’s rainforests are where the cocoa plant first grew. Centuries ago, Aztec and Mayan elites valued this ‘food of the gods’ so highly that only royalty enjoyed it in special drinks.

Today, Ecuadorian chocolate is known worldwide. Local chocolatiers focus on quality, turning local beans into rich, aromatic chocolate. It’s a must-try experience for any foodie.

With Canadians flocking to explore the world, Quito extends a warm welcome. In December, Air Canada will offer three weekly flights from Montreal and a weekly departure from Toronto. Making your Ecuador adventure easier than ever.
