Goals and Objectives

“The EFWA Buya Subi Project aims to provide promotion, education, investment, and cultural awareness to rejuvenate traditional weaving in Donggala artisanal textiles, safeguarding their future,” said EFWA Founder and Director, Dr. Zuhal Kuvan-Mills. “The proliferation of cheap, fast-fashion textiles, such as polyester, poses environmental risks through toxic production and undermines the value of handmade textiles. The slow production rates of traditional crafts struggle to compete with fast fashion. Resulting in skilled artisans unable to pass down their expertise due to limited income opportunities from handmade fabrics.”

Significance of Donggala textiles

In Central Sulawesi, traditional textiles hold immense economic and cultural significance, fostering identity and community. Yet, like many local textile traditions, they face the risk of losing ancient knowledge and craftsmanship.

Traditional Donggala textiles are a vital part of Indonesian cultural traditions, closely tied to local customs, stories, and identities. To ensure the survival of these centuries-old crafts, it is crucial to establish supportive structures that protect artisans and highlight the relevance of their work in today’s society.

UNESCO Recognition and Sustainable Development

UNESCO has recognised traditional craftsmanship as an intangible heritage that requires protection and promotion under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Opportunities for sustainable livelihoods exist in cultural tourism, and the traditional craft sector plays a key role in achieving SDGs related to women’s empowerment, reducing inequality, increasing access to employment, and strengthening sustainable production and consumption.

If you have attended a European opera, you would know that opera costumes are very extravagant and well-made. Costume designers have a significant influence on films and theatre, and we often do not give them the recognition they deserve in the arts and fashion.

Elena Razlog is also a talented mezzo-soprano who has performed with Vancouver Opera. She has also performed with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the UBC Symphony Orchestra. Her list of accomplishments includes a solo program as part of the New York Lyric Opera Gala, which takes place annually at Carnegie Hall and on Broadway theatre, NY. She has also toured across the United States, Europe, and Japan.

The fashion exhibition and runway shows showcase the work of various artists and designers, including Atelier Biologico Firenze from Italy, Green Embassy from Australia, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, Sylvia Calvo from Spain, Zuzana Hrubos from the Czech Republic, Gia Dianna from the USA, and others.

There was an exceptional display of talented eco-designers from Australia, including Amee Dennis, Beads N Pods, Emergent Art Glass, Emily Craig studio, Fabric of Nature, Funk N Soul 97, Keli Studios, Leah Kelly, Ashley Majoni, Mon, Regis, and others, who were prominently showcased in both evening runway shows. 

EFWA Florence edition featured artist talks with several speakers throughout the two-day gathering at Spedale del Bigallo, a heritage hostel located on a hillside with views of Florence. It is believed that the original building on the property was a hospital constructed in the 13th century for the needy, the ill, and pilgrims.

In the early 15th century, civic records indicate the addition of a church attached to a main building that featured rooms on two floors. Meanwhile, on the opposite side of the church stood a residence for priests and a home for the farmer.

Today, it is known as the Bigallo hostel, offering dormitories and rooms with a total of 52 beds, located within one of the region’s most historic accommodations. It provides guests with a connection to Florence’s history, a stunning garden, and a panoramic terrace for dining, all complemented by an unforgettable view of the city.  

Florence is recognized as the birthplace of Italian fashion, especially during the 1950s. While Milan later emerged as the fashion capital, Florence continues to hold a significant place in the narrative of Italian style, particularly for its contributions to bringing the Italian fashion industry to the forefront of the global scene. Therefore, it is only fitting that EFWA selected Florence to host their opening global fashion show.

The fashion and art show attracted several hundred spectators and showcased Mawogan, a bespoke African collection comprising 30 pieces, including children’s clothing and stylish dresses adorned with bold prints and vibrant colours.

Mawogan fashion began its wonderful journey in 2016, created by the passionate Yao Zeus Mohammed. His heartfelt mission is to celebrate and give back to the rich beauty of our culture and heritage. 

Each piece is thoughtfully designed by Yao and crafted by a talented team of artists in Togo. The joy and vibrancy of the fabrics his ancestors wore inspire Yao’s designs, adding a touch of happiness to every creation.

Yao’s passion for working with these beautiful fabrics leaves a trace of excitement and warmth wherever they are worn.

Heritage in Motion: African fashion and art show, provided a preview of the forthcoming AFWV. Through fashion, art, and performance, it showcases the vibrant heritage and modern developments of African culture.

Introduced in the 1950s, skinny jeans were initially worn by film stars such as Sandra Dee, Marilyn Monroe, and Roy Rogers. Renowned for their thigh-hugging, form-fitting silhouette, skinny jeans taper at the ankle and are widely coveted for their slim cut that exudes sex appeal.

Premium denim

In the early 2000s, designers introduced us to “premium denim,” transforming jeans into high-fashion items as celebrity culture surged throughout the decade. Remember when 7 For All Mankind jeans debuted with logo-emblazoned back pockets, quickly becoming a status symbol? Skinny jeans were everywhere, often styled with era-specific trends like ballet flats, peplum tops, and Louboutin heels. Women could choose between designer brands and fast-fashion outlets.

Skinny pants

I first noticed the return of skinny jeans in the spring collections from European luxury brands. However, the style has evolved based on the interpretations of leading designers. 

On the runways, Isabel Marant, Prada, and Tod’s presented very slim-shape pants, which they refer to as skinny pants. This time, the notable change is incorporating plaid patterns instead of solely solid colors. Many are crafted from finely tailored fabrics. They fit the leg well without clinging so tightly that only the shape of a woman’s leg is visible.

The new skinny pant styles are anticipated to arrive in stores this summer. However, seasonal trends may cause many consumers to postpone shopping for pants and jeans until fall.

Silhouette shift

Whenever there is a significant silhouette shift, it positively impacts the fashion retail sector. This change also applies to footwear, as individuals need different shoes to complement their bottoms. Consequently, they frequently seek various tops to match, which can result in an entirely new wardrobe.

Throughout my career, I’ve collaborated with many fashion models who have always worn skinny jeans. These models understand that a slim silhouette makes them appear taller and more attractive, so skinny jeans continue to be popular in the film and fashion industry.

Dressed in a strapless, floor-length white gown, the first model stepped onto the runway and revealed her violin, which was hidden behind her back. She began to play, and the room quickly filled with the music of Palladio by Karl Jenkins. Unbeknownst to the audience, the model was Kristy Hughes, a professional violinist with the Community Chamber Collective. This eight-member collective was seated in the balcony, performing for the entire Green Embassy fashion show under the direction of Shaun Fraser.

Ghost Glacier by Green Embassy was the grand finale for EFWA, featuring fashion designer Zuhal Kuvan-Mills, who showcased 20 couture outfits conveying a critical, thought-provoking message about our environment. 

The initial garments were solid white, symbolizing the glaciers of the ocean. As the show progressed, we noticed increasingly blue hues in each piece. By midway through the show, the blue tones became evident, accompanied by the music from the Phantom of the Opera that filled the room. The final outfit featured a long blue dress paired with an embroidered white scarf worn by the model, representing oceans nearly devoid of glaciers.

Over the past decade, I have admired Zuhal Kuvan-Mills’ creative mind as she crafts couture garments while also taking steps to preserve our environment. On her Perth farm, she raises several alpacas from which she gathers fibres to create outfits. She consistently works with natural materials such as alpaca, merino wool, silk, and organic cotton, never wasting a single piece of material. 

Green Embassy’s eco-fashion creations are fully handcrafted in Australia and have gained international recognition as the country’s first organic fashion label. Their textiles and garments hold certification from Global Organic Textile Standards, which are the premier benchmarks for quality assurance in the global organic textile industry.
