I admit I have a personal attachment to British fashion.…
Melding his signature clean lines with colorful digital designs, Giorgio Armani unveiled “New Pop”, his Emporio Armani Autumn Winter 2016-17 collection, at Milan Fashion Week. In pursuit of a younger Italian woman, the collection was an homage to the high tech era, offering splashes of fluorescent color and emoji-like prints on funky fabrics.
Dressing for the Digital Age
“New Pop” proved that “King Giorgio”, as he is known to his colleagues, is equally at home designing youthful, trendy pieces as he is producing elegant gowns for the red carpet. Armani, now 81, embraced the new digital generation, showing black fabrics printed with geometrical motifs made up of squares, triangles and circles in bubble gum pink, lime green and citrus yellow.
Flashes of Bright Color
These bold, bright and playful geometric shapes were found throughout this collection on dresses, blouses, skirts and jackets as well as accessories such as handbags, brooches and earrings. Also included in the show were slim cut trousers, loosely pleated shorts and stylish black patent mini skirts, all of which drew focus to the legs. The look worked best when a patterned dress or skirt was combined with one of this season’s slightly oversized black jackets which offered a soft and loose silhouette reminiscent of 1980s power dressing.
Sexy Sheer Tops
For evening, Armani dressed his woman in richly colored sequin blouses paired with black skirts or pants and topped with chic and youthful black vests. For the more daring of Armani’s patrons, sexy sheer tops with only a few small brightly coloured cutout shapes strategically placed on the chest were paired with mini skirts featuring bright metallic patterns.
Italian Sense of Individualism
Fashion is always evolving and Armani, who has been in the trade for over 40 years, reminded us with this collection why his is the largest and most successful independent Italian design house today. Women are more technologically savvy than ever before and Armani understands this, pushing the design envelope in this digital age. As long as he continues to surprise and delight his customers with such fresh new looks, the Italian sense of individualism and elegance will flourish in the fashion world.
