The personal appearance of Public School designers Maxwell Osborne and Dao-Yi Chow at Holt Renfrew Vancouver last week to debut their fall winter men’s collection was just another milestone in the long list of fashion achievements for this dynamic duo from New York.

Public School label is a men’s and women’s line of sportswear and tailored designs that represents the soul of the restless energy of New York city which they both live and work.

New York’s restless energy defined

It is their creative energy which has allowed them to redefine men’s and women’s wear as they blend high and low references from street fashion, music and art to give us a perspective never seen before.

Their creative style has won them accolades from the prestigious CFDA Awards since 2010, including the CFDA Vogue Fashion fund Award in 2013 and now the Woolmark prize for menswear.

Designing for others was not inspiring nor fulfilling

“We have worked together for many years,” says Maxwell Osborne during an interview with StyleDrama last week. “Together on private label for stores and other projects”

Both soon realized that designing for others wasn’t inspiring nor fulfilling, so they decided to create their own label Public School in 2008.

With their offices in the heart of New York’s garment district, it is where they create all their designs, cutting, sewing and incorporate the best fabrics from American, Italian and Japanese mills.

Public School takes NY street wear into high fashion

Public School’s fall 2014 collection is all about high and low when it comes to fabric and proportions.

They mix fabrics which you would not normal associate them such as wool bonded to jersey on jackets which allows the garment to drape well and is used in shorts, tops and suiting.

I would describe the look as sporty, not too casual as the tailoring and quality is superb giving it a touch of New York swagger.

Dao-Yi Chow said it best when he tells us that his inspiration comes from the street. Public School is all about making street wear into high fashion, not fashion trying to be street wear.

Public School collection is available at Holt Renfrew, Barney’s New York, Harvey Nichols, Isetan, Odin, Maxfield and Louis Boston.
