Erno Laszlo: A Hollywood legend

Erno Laszlo was a Hungarian-born medical doctor from the 1920‘s who became a celebrity to the Who’s who of society, Hollywood and even American royalty Jacqueline Kennedy, so I was excited to learn more on this legendary skincare brand at Holt Renfrew Vancouver last week.

“Erno Laszlo is the authoritative in skincare,” stated Hylton Lea, Sales Director of Erno Laszlo. “Not only are we innovators in reversing the aging process, our products have stood the test of time.”

It all began in 1927 with Dr. Erno Laszlo helping to heal the complexion of Princess Stephanie of Belgium.

Soon afterwards, Warner Bros. Studios offered him a senior make-up role for their Hollywood starlets as they were transitioning from black and white to all Technocolor II film production during the 30’s.

He declined their offer, but began to build a Hollywood A-list clientele such as Ava Gardner, Katherine Hepburn and Grace Kelly.

In 1939, Erno Laszlo opened The Institute on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan for his elite clientele.

The Duchess of Windsor referred to it as the “House of Silence” as it was where his beauty secrets for royalty and Hollywood stars were kept.

Membership was only possible if you were referred by at least two other members and he only had 3,000 clients.

In 2012, The Institute reopened on West Broadway in Soho New York which offers membership treatments for all, not just Hollywood’s elite.

Dr. Erno Laszlo pioneered many firsts such as developing translucent skincare cream verses the thick green colored cold cream that women were previously wearing to bed each night plus adding sunscreen to skincare products.

One of his first products is a cleansing system where the skin is first prepared with a cleansing oil to lift the impurities and to soften it.

Then a Sea-mud soap bar base on your skin type, is then used to deeply cleanse, exfoliate and condition.

Followed by 30 splashes of comfortable hot water to rinse, plump and revitalize the skin.

Proscribed by Dr. Erno Laszlo over 90 years ago to Hollywood starlets, these skincare products are still available today.

Recently, they introduced The Transphuse Collection of anti-aging formulas that disrupts the causes of wrinkles and fines lines to rebuild and reenergize the skin for a youthful complexion.

“It addresses the causes of aging,” said Hylton Lea. By inhibiting aging in the cells by disrupting bio-aging and accelerating healthy cell growth.

All of Dr. Erno Laszlo’s skincare programs are highly disciplined and he refused to continue treating any patient including Hollywood starlets if they did not follow his daily cleansing regiments.

During my visit to Holt Renfrew Vancouver, Hylton Lea left me with a wonderful story from the 60‘s about First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy where she wrote to Dr. Enro Laszlo asking for him to visit the White House to examine a rash on President Jack Kennedy.

He wrote back congratulating Jacqueline Kennedy on her husband being elected the President of the United States, but told her that he does not make “house calls”.

As a fashion and American film history enthusiast, his legendary eccentrics and discipline makes him a true Hollywood legend.

As Audrey Hepburn once said: “I owe 50% of my beauty to my mother and the other 50% to Erno Laszlo.”
